United Kingdom: John Whittingdale appointed the new Secretary of State of Culture, Media and Sport

John Whittingdale was appointed as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport of the United Kingdom on 11/05/2015, in the new majority conservative government headed by David Cameron, after the UK general election on 07/05/2015. He succeeds Sajid Javid who, became the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.

John Whittingdale chaired the inquiry, which opened in 2011, into the English bid for the 2018 World Cup (to be held in Russia, by decision of the FIFA Executive Committee on 02/12/2010) as well as the body investigating the new corruption allegations concerning the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. "If the choice of Qatar was as a result of improper payments being made, then that strengthens an already strong case for re-running the whole 2022 contest," said John Whittingdale.
