Bundesliga TV rights: "We must not make ourselves dependent on a monopoly" (K-H Rummenigge)

"We are facing a big problem in Germany: the pay-TV market is dominated by a de facto monopoly," stated Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, referring to the pay-TV group Sky Deutschland, in an interview to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung on 17/05/2015.

"There must be new players (TV competitors) into the field. Only competition drives up the price, this is the law of the market. In the long term, we must not make ourselves dependent on a monopoly. Otherwise we will not even catch up with the Spaniards or Italians (in audiovisual rights revenues)," added Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the chairman of the executive board of FC Bayern Munich AG.

The Bundesliga audiovisual rights accounted to €690m in 2014-15 (€615m for domestic rights and €75m for international rights).
