Borussia Dortmund: Signal Iduna Park equipped with 11,132 solar panels, a world record for a stadium

Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga) and its partner RWE (energy supplier) are installing 11,132 photovoltaic panels on the roof of Signal Iduna Park (81,365 capacity, Dortmund, GER) with a generated power of more than 5 megawatts, which is a "world record" for a stadium, according to the club on 21/11/2025.

"Going forward, BVB will be able to cover up to half of the stadium's electricity requirements with solar power. Compared to the previous power supply, the new solar system will save around 1,700 tons of CO₂ per year," said Borussia Dortmund.

The installation of battery energy storage units with a capacity of 3.7 megawatt hours is also planned "by the beginning of 2026". Once connected to the new photovoltaic system, it will enable "climate-friendly electricity can also be used when the sun is not shining."

• RWE and Borussia Dortmund had previously installed 200 solar panels on the roof of the BVB-Fan World building near the stadium. RWE became a premium partner of the club from the 2024-25 season for a six-year period focused on sustainable development.
