"There will be only two promotions and two relegations between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, and two promotions and two relegations between Ligue 2 and and the National (French third division), starting from the 2016-17 season," announced Frédéric Thiriez, president of the LFP, following the meeting of the board of the league, in Paris (FRA) on 21/05/2015.

Reducing the movement between the top three French divisions to only 2 teams (as opposed to the current "three up, three down" system" was one of four recommendations proposed by a special working group commissioned by the UCPF (French union of professional football clubs) on 23/04/2015.

"This (2-team promotion/relegation) measure has been voted on by the league's board of directors, and has already been (provisionally) approved by the FFF Executive Committee and I thank Noël Le Graët (FFF president)," said Frederic Thiriez.
