AFCON 2025/Algeria-Nigeria: two Algeria players suspended and $100,000 fine for FAF

A suspension of several official matches for two of its players (Luca Zidane, two matches; Rafik Belghali, four matches including two suspended) and fines totalling $100,000: these are the sanctions imposed by CAF's disciplinary board on the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) following the incidents that occurred at the end of the match between Algeria and Nigeria (0-2, quarter-final of the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025) played on 10/01/2026 in Marrakesh (Morocco), announced the Confédération Africaine de Football on 21/01/2026.

Two days after the match, CAF had "strongly condemned" the "unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials" concerning the Algeria - Nigeria and Cameroon - Morocco (0-2) games, and referred the matters to the disciplinary board for instruction. With regard to the latter match, Samuel Eto’o, president of the FECAFOOT, had been sanctioned as early as 15/01/2026 (see “Further reading” section).
