"These charges (against FIFA) come from the U.S. Department of Justice and are based on a massive investigation. The individual who led the investigation, Loretta E. Lynch, is now the U.S. attorney general and enjoys the authority to allocate massive resources to the investigation and the resulting trial," wrote Lester Munson, a legal analyst for the American sports media outlet ESPN, on 27/05/2015.

The U.S. Department of Justice publicised a 47 count indictment against 14 defendants -- including 7 leaders in world football arrested in Zurich (SUI) -- for racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies over a 24 year period on 27/05/2015. Four additional individual defendants and 2 corporate defendants have already entered guilty pleas.
