Belgium/Pro League: a pilot project on the regulated use of pyrotechnics in stadiums

The Pro League, with the support of Belgian Minister for Security and Home Affairs Bernard Quintin, has launched "a pilot project on the safe and regulated use of pyrotechnics in football stadiums," announced the Belgian league on 04/02/2026.

The League and the Belgian government aim to "better reconcile safety for all with the supporter experience" by proposing "a safe framework based on clear agreements and close cooperation between all relevant stakeholders".

"A limited number of clubs will soon be selected to implement temporary pilot projects. These projects may only take place after the explicit approval of local authorities and fire services, and will be closely monitored and evaluated. The Pro League is launching a consultation process to designate the pilot clubs. After the necessary preparations, each selected club will choose a number of matches during which the pilot project will be implemented," said the Pro League regarding the rollout of the initiative.
