"I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress. I will continue to exercise my functions as FIFA president until that election," announced Joseph Blatter, the president of FIFA, during a press conference at the headquarters of the international federation in Zurich (SUI) on 02/06/2015.

Joseph Blatter, 79 years old (born on 10/03/1936), was re-elected to the presidency for the 2015-2019 period during the FIFA Congress held in Zurich (SUI) on 29/05/2015. He succeeded the Brazilian Joao Havelange on 08/06/1998 and was re-elected in 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2015.

"Since I shall not be a candidate, and am therefore now free from the constraints that elections inevitably impose, I shall be able to focus on driving far-reaching, fundamental reforms that transcend our previous efforts. For years, we have worked hard to put in place administrative reforms, but it is plain to me that while these must continue, they are not enough," added Joseph Blatter on 02/06/2015.
