"I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress. I will continue to exercise my functions as FIFA President until that election," announced Joseph Blatter, 02/06/2015, shortly before 19:00 CET, during a press conference announced only two hours earlier, at the headquarters of the international federation in Zurich (SUI).

Joseph Blatter, 79 years old (born 10/03/1936), was re-elected to the presidency for the 2015-2019 period during the FIFA Congress held in Zurich on 29/05/2015. He succeeded the Brazilian Joao Havelange on 08/06/1998, and was reelected in 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2015.

"I have been reflecting deeply about my presidency and about the forty years in which my life has been inextricably bound to FIFA and the great sport of football. I cherish FIFA more than anything and I want to do only what is best for FIFA and for football. I felt compelled to stand for re-election, as I believed that this was the best thing for the organisation. That election is over but FIFA’s challenges are not. FIFA needs a profound overhaul," stated Blatter.
