Spain: "A football World Cup is not just about football" (Alejandro Blanco, Spanish Olympic Committee)

"As part of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the Spanish government has decided to lead the organisation of the event in Spain, as this is a national project. A FIFA World Cup is not just about football. There are many aspects surrounding it that a host country must manage, and the 2030 edition, which will be held in Spain, Morocco and Portugal, not to mention the (three) matches scheduled in South America, presents a very high level of organisational complexity," said Alejandro Blanco, president of the COE (Comité Olímpico Español / Spanish Olympic Committee), to Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo on 13/03/2026.

Alejandro Blanco has been appointed by the Spanish authorities to chair the "coordination working group for the 2030 FIFA World Cup".

"The Spanish government is creating an interministerial commission for the organisation of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This Commission will lead, together with Portugal and Morocco, the organisation of the first FIFA World Cup to span multiple continents.
