RC Deportivo: agreement with the municipality to redevelop Riazor, which will not host the 2030 World Cup

RC Deportivo de La Coruña (LALIGA Hypermotion) and the municipality of A Coruña have reached an agreement to redevelop the Riazor sports complex, which includes the Palacio de los Deportes and the Estadio Abanca-Riazor (32,490 capacity), announced the club and the municipality on 16/03/2026.

This redevelopment project will be carried out jointly by the club and the municipality, which owns the facilities. It "marks the beginning of a new phase of institutional cooperation and public-private partnership, with the aim of strengthening the role of sport as a social, economic and attractiveness driver for the city," said RC Deportivo, controlled by Spanish bank Abanca since 2020.

"We have taken a responsible decision: to withdraw from the World Cup bid process and focus our efforts on a project specific to A Coruña," said Inés Rey, mayor of the city. The Estadio Abanca-Riazor was among the 11 venues pre-selected by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to host matches at the 2030 World Cup co-hosted by Spain, Morocco and Portugal.
