FIGC: Gabriele Gravina resigns following Italy’s elimination, elective general assembly convened on 22/06

Gabriele Gravina, president of the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio since October 2018, announced his resignation and the convening of an elective general assembly on 22/06/2026, the FIGC announced on 02/04/2026. His resignation comes two days after Italy’s elimination in the 2026 World Cup play-offs by Bosnia and Herzegovina (1-1, 4-1 on penalties) in Zenica (BIH) on 31/03/2026.

Italy, four-time World Cup winners (1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006), will miss the 23^rd edition of the competition in 2026 (held in the United States, Mexico and Canada), having already failed to qualify for the previous two editions, in 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar).

Born on 05/10/1953, Gabriele Gravina was appointed president of the FIGC on 22/10/2018, following a crisis caused by Italy’s elimination in the 2018 World Cup play-offs against Sweden (0-1, 0-0), which led to the resignation of Carlo Tavecchio on 20/11/2017.
