Brazil: "Historic meeting" between CBF and professional clubs over plans for a "single league"

The Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF) has organised a "historic meeting" with Série A (20 clubs) and Série B (20 clubs) teams, as well as representatives of Brazil’s regional federations, in Rio de Janeiro on 06/04/2026, "to launch discussions on the creation of a single football league in Brazil".

"During the event, the CBF presented studies conducted since the first months of the current administration (Samir Xaud was elected president of the Brazilian Football Confederation on 25/05/2025) to highlight the untapped potential of Brazilian football, whose top division (known as the ”Brasileirão” or ”Série A”) is nevertheless the sixth most valuable league in the world," the CBF said.

"The analysis was further developed following a study visit to Europe in January 2026, during which the Brazilian delegation explored the concepts, governance models and strategies of leagues and federations in England, Germany and Spain on topics such as financial fair play, technology and the professionalisation of refereeing," the Federation added.
