2026 World Cup: award process suspended, the host will not be appointed at the 2017 FIFA Congress

"It was decided to place the administrative process on hold for the 2026 FIFA World Cup bidding due to the current situation. Further decisions regarding the 2026 FIFA World Cup bidding process will be discussed by the FIFA Executive Committee at a later date," announced FIFA on 10/06/2015.

The host of the 23rd World Cup in 2026 was originally to be designated at the 67th FIFA Congress in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) from 10 to 12/05/2017, indicated by the international federation after a meeting of its Executive Committee in Zurich (SUI) on 25/05/2015.

  • Joseph Blatter was re-elected for a fifth term as the president of FIFA on 29/05/2015, but announced that he would lay down his mandate on 02/06/2015.
  • An extraordinary meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee will be held in July 2015 to determine the date of the extraordinary elective congress, at which the successor to Joseph Blatter will be elected.
  • This extraordinary elective congress will be held in Zurich, the city where the headquarters of the international federation are located, between December 2015 and March 2016.
