2026 World Cup: "Football a driver of cooperation, development and progress" (FIFA)

"The legacy of the FIFA World Cup contributes to making football a driver of international cooperation, economic development and collective progress," FIFA said regarding the event entitled ”From FIFA World Cup 2022 to FIFA World Cup 2026: A Legacy in Motion,” organised by the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations at UN headquarters in New York City (USA) on 22 May 2026.

The event was organised on the occasion of “World Football Day” celebrated every 25 May under a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2024, "in recognition of the values of peace, tolerance and cooperation among peoples" represented by the sport.

"We spend so much time debating what divides us, but actually when we bring people together, we realise there are many more things that unite us than things that divide us. This is what the World Cup shows us every time. What we saw in Qatar in 2022, I’m sure we’ll see again in North America this year.
