FIFA: European Parliament "welcomes Joseph Blatter's resignation" and calls for "an interim leader"

"Parliament welcomes Joseph Blatter's resignation as FIFA president and calls on the federation to select an interim leader to replace him," states the European Parliament in a resolution adopted by a strong majority viashow of hands, on 11/06/2015.

"FIFA should put in place a transparent, balanced and democratic decision-making process, including for the election of the new president," adds the Parliament resolution. "The European Parliament regrets that recent corruption allegations against the international football federation FIFA have seriously damaged the credibility and the integrity of global football (and) call for a zero-tolerance policy on corruption in football," reads the European Parliament resolution.

Re-elected for the 2015-2019 period on 29/05/2015, Joseph Blatter, FIFA president since 08/06/1998, announced on 02/06/2015 his intention to "lay down his mandate" at a special elective Congress to be organised between December 2015 and February 2016, but said he would continue to perform his duties until the election of his successor.
