Premier League: Everton ordered to pay £35m compensation to Burnley over 2021-22 relegation

A Premier League Independent Disciplinary Commission ordered Everton FC (Premier League) to pay £35m (€40.5m) in compensation to Burnley FC (relegated to the Sky Bet Championship for 2026-27), the two clubs announced on 10 June 2026.

The Liverpool-based club was found to have breached the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the 2021-22 season, at the end of which it avoided relegation while Burnley dropped into the second division. According to the Commission, it was more likely than not that the sporting advantage gained by Everton through its PSR breach contributed to Burnley’s relegation.

The £35m award comprised two elements: £26m in economic losses linked to Burnley’s relegation and £9.1m in interest calculated up to 31 July 2025.

Everton, which said it was "surprised and angered" by a decision based on a ruling that was "fundamentally flawed in both law and fact," announced it would appeal.
