Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with a capacity of 80,824 for the 2026 World Cup, hosted the tournament’s opening match between Mexico and South Africa (2-0) on 11 June. Two additional group-stage matches, as well as a Round of 16 fixture and a quarter-final, will also be played at the venue (see schedule below).

The stadium, which opened in 1966 and is one of the 16 venues selected for the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, became the first in history to host matches at three FIFA World Cups, having previously been used during the tournaments held exclusively in Mexico in 1970 (won by Brazil) and 1986 (won by Argentina). It hosted the final on both occasions. It is also the only stadium to have staged four FIFA tournaments: the FIFA World Cup, the FIFA U-20 World Cup, the FIFA U-17 World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup.

"Six of the 10 highest attendances in FIFA World Cup history were recorded at the Azteca," FIFA said, notably citing the attendance record of 114,600 spectators for the Mexico-Paraguay group-stage match during the 1986 World Cup.
