FIGC: Giovanni Malagò elected president with 68.58% of the vote, defeating Giancarlo Abete (29.17%)

Giovanni Malago has been elected president of the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio after receiving 68.58% of the vote in the first round during the elective federal assembly held at the Rome Cavalieri A Waldorf Astoria hotel (Rome, ITA), on 22 June 2026. Giancarlo Abete, his sole opponent, obtained 29.17% (blank votes: 2.25%).

The former president of CONI, who notably received the support of the Serie A Enilive clubs, succeeds Gabriele Gravina, president of the FIGC since October 2018, who announced on 2 April 2026 that he would step down from his position. Three days earlier, Bosnia and Herzegovina had faced Italy (1-1, 4-1 on penalties) in Zenica (BIH), a match that resulted in Italy’s third consecutive elimination from a World Cup qualifying campaign.
