FIA: three-term limit for president abolished by Extraordinary General Assembly

The proposal by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem (UAE) to abolish the limit of three four-year terms for the office he has held since 17 December 2021 (having been re-elected on 12 December 2025) was approved (with 90% of the votes, according to the BBC) at the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile’s Extraordinary General Assembly held in Macau (CHN) on 25 June 2026.

Born on 12 November 1961, Mohammed Ben Sulayem is a former rally driver who served as FIA Vice president for Sport before being elected president.

The 12-year limit (three four-year terms) had been introduced during the presidency of Jean Todt (2009-2021), who succeeded Max Mosley (1993-2009).

The FIA also currently imposes an age limit of 70 for its president. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who will turn 65 on 12 November 2026, is also reportedly considering removing that restriction.
