Sky Bet League One: "The PFA's decision risks becoming the wrong fight at the wrong time" (T. Birch, EFL)

"The PFA’s decision to launch legal action against the English Football League over changes to Sky Bet League One’s Squad Cost Management Protocol (SCMP) risks becoming the wrong fight at the wrong time," Trevor Birch, chief executive of the EFL, said in a statement published on the English league’s website on 14 August 2026, the day before the start of the 2026-27 season of England’s third tier.

The Professional Footballers’ Association, the English union for professional players, announced on 11 August 2026 that it had "begun High Court proceedings in relation to new wage restriction rules brought in by the EFL this (2026-27) season."

Under these new regulations, introduced on 15 May 2026 and also applicable to Sky Bet League Two, the wage bill is now capped at 50% of a club’s turnover…
