"Tom Burwell has left his position as interim CEO of Sunderland AFC (Premier League) with immediate effect," the club announced on 5 October 2026.

Burwell, chief executive of Bia Sports Group, the entity set up to manage the sports investments of Kyril Louis-Dreyfus (FRA-SUI) and Juan Sartori (URU), including Sunderland AFC, had held the role on an interim basis since March 2026, following the departure of David Bruce, pending the recruitment of a permanent chief executive.

"Sunderland AFC owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus will assume the role of executive chairman, working closely with the Club's senior management team to lead the club day-to-day," the club said.
