Italy: FIGC placed under administration, Giovanni Malago appointed "extraordinary commissioner" by CONI

The CONI Executive Board unanimously accepted the proposal of Luciano Buonfiglio, president of the Italian National Olympic Committee, to place the Italian Football Federation under administration, so that new elections can be held by 31 January 2027 at the latest, the FIGC announced on 6 October 2026.

The CONI National Council (a broader body than the Executive Board) decided, also unanimously, to appoint Giovanni Malago, president of the Federation since 22 June 2026, as "extraordinary commissioner," tasked with running the FIGC pending these elections.

The situation stems from an irregularity in Giovanni Malago's election as FIGC president: he did not hold a licence with the Federation and should therefore not have been allowed to stand as a candidate to succeed Gabriele Gravina.
