"A partnership between the EuroLeague, FIBA, and the NBA to unify the European basketball ecosystem would unlock the game's enormous potential across Europe for the benefit of clubs, players, and, most importantly, fans," FIBA and the NBA stated in a joint press release published on 8 October 2026.

This statement comes two days after a meeting in Italy of the owners of the 13 clubs that are shareholders in Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA), during which the NBA and FIBA’s proposal was rejected. The valuation of the EuroLeague in the proposed merger to form the future NBA Europe, and the economic terms of such a deal as presented by the NBA and FIBA, failed to convince the clubs, although discussions are ongoing.
