MLS: Atlanta franchise which will make its debut in 2017 will be named "Atlanta United FC"

The Atlanta franchise, which will enter the MLS for the 2017 season, will be called "Atlanta United FC" following a survey of the 21,000 fans (currently registered) of the franchise, announced MLS on 25/06/2015. 70% of fans voted in favour of the name.

Two other MLS franchises have the word "United" in their name: DC United (Washington DC) and Minnesota United (Minnesota), the latter of which are scheduled to make their debut in the MLS in 2018, conditional on improvements to their stadium situation. The logo of Atlanta United FC will be unveiled at a party organised by the franchise on 07/07/2015. The franchise is owned by Arthur Blank, the co-founder of The Home Depot, a home improvement retailer, and owner of the Atlanta Falcons (NFL).

"You don't look for one name that encapsulates everything about your brand. You build up your own identity through your (supporter) customs, the songs they sing, through organic nicknames that will develop, the kits and through the style of play on the field," said Darren Eales, the president of the future Atlanta franchise, on 25/06/2015.
