Spain: Real Madrid to challenge the LaLiga - Mediapro agreement for international TV rights

Real Madrid CF (Liga BBVA) have brought a challenge before the CMBC (Comisión Nacional de la Competencia y los Mercados), the Spanish competition authority, over the agreement between LaLiga and Mediapro which should enable the Spanish telecommunications group to become the agency responsible for marketing the international TV rights to LaLiga for five seasons from 2015-16, according to Spanish sources on 26/06/2015.

According to its official journal on 30/04/2015, the Spanish government enacted a royal decree which establishes the collective selling of domestic and international audiovisual rights of Spanish professional competitions from 2016-17. LaLiga announced on 22/06/2015 that it wanted to bring forward the collective marketing of these rights to the 2015-16 season. Mediapro has allegedly promised, according to several Spanish media outlets, to release the rights of 37 Spanish professionals clubs previously acquired for the 2015-16 season to become the marketing agency of LaLiga’s international TV rights for five seasons, from 2015-16.
