Kozo Tashima, president of the Japan Football Association (JFA) from 2016 to 2024, announced his candidacy for the presidency of FIFA on 5 November 2026.

"It is not about winning or losing, but about conveying to the world the ethics, rigour and integrity that characterise Japanese football. What FIFA needs today are these values that we have preserved. I decided to run in order to make this appeal to the whole world," the former international player, now honorary president of the JFA, told Japanese sports daily Sports Nippon.

"I am grateful to make such an announcement with the full support of the JFA," he added. He was succeeded as president of the JFA on 23 March 2024 by Tsuneyasu Miyamoto, former captain of the Japanese national team.
