France: LFP board votes for only 2 teams up and down between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 from 2015-16

The board of the French LFP, meeting at the headquarters of the League in Paris (FRA), has decided set teh number of promotions and demotions between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 at only 2 teams, taking effect for the 2015-16 season, the board announced on 09/07/2015. The proposal received 14 votes in favour and 2 votes against.

The LFP board had proposed to limit to two -- instead of the current system of three -- promotions and relegations, to take effect from 2016-17, between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, and also between Ligue 2 and the National (French third division), on 21/05/2015.

However, the LFP only organises Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, and therefore does not have jurisdiction over the third division National, which is organised by the FFF. Facing strong opposition from amateur clubs and a number of professional clubs, the LFP had compromised, on 18/06/2015, to postpone the reforms of the "2+2" rule within the top three divisions of French football until 2017-18, but only if the national assembly of French football endorsed the "2+2" system.
