"Since Europe is the centre of world football there are some who have their doubts about an Asian becoming president of FIFA. But the idea that only a European can become FIFA president is why FIFA is plagued by corruption," stated Chung Mong-joon, the billionaire tycoon of the conglomerate Hyundai and a former FIFA vice-president, to the Korean Yonhap News agency on 21/07/2015.

"I am thinking of running (for the presidency of FIFA). I would like to open a new era for FIFA. I am positively considering running for the presidency and will be able to reveal my decision soon," added Chung Mong-joon, who was part of the FIFA Executive Committee from 1994 to 2011.
