2024 Summer Olympics: City of Boston officially withdraws its bid to host the Olympic Games

The City of Boston (United States) formally withdrew its bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, announced the USOC (United States Olympic Committee) and the Boston 2024 association on 27/07/2015. This decision follows the refusal by Marty Walsh, the mayor of Boston, to sign a key document which guaranteed that the city would cover all additional costs that exceeded in the announced budget of €4bn.

"I will not sign a document that puts one dollar of taxpayers' money on the line for one penny of overruns on the Olympics," said Marty Walsh, on 27/07/2015. The four cities that are declared candidates are Paris (France), Rome (Italy), Hamburg (Germany) and Budapest (Hungary).

"As we reflected on the timing and the status of our bid in this international competition, we have jointly come to the conclusion that the extensive efforts required in Boston at this stage of the bid process would detract from the U.S.’ ability to compete against strong interest from cities like Rome, Paris, Budapest and Hamburg," said Steve Pagliuca, the head of the Boston 2024 Olympic bid, on 27/07/2015…
