The IOC has announced a change in the schedule of the bidding process for the Olympic Summer Games in 2024 at the 128th plenary meeting of the body held in Kuala Lumpur from 31/07 to 03/08/2015. The previous application process consisted of two phases: the first phase identified cities as "applicants", and then in a second phase the IOC appointed the candidate cities. Now, cities that have filed an application before 15/09/2015 will go through a process divided into three phases.

During the first phase, to be held from 15/09/2015 to May 2016, cities will present their view of the Olympic spirit and heritage. In a second phase, from May to December 2016, candidates will present their financial guarantees and their governance. Finally, during the third phase, from December 2016 to September 2017, cities will present the operational phase of their application (infrastructure, transport, activities...). The host city of the 2024 Olympic Games will be appointed in September 2017 during the 130th IOC session in Lima (Peru).
