Pedro Proença was elected president of the LPFP, the Portuguese Professional Football League, on 30/07/2015. His four-year term runs until the end of 2019. The former international referee, who retired in January 2015, was elected by 32 votes to 23 during a special meeting of the Portuguese league, running against Luis Duque, the outgoing president, on 28/07/2015.

Elected on 27/10/2014, Luis Duque should have theoretically completed his term in 2018, but was forced to resign when faced with the introduction of a reform of the regulations of the LPFP. Pedro Proença, supported by FC Porto and Sporting Clube de Portugal (Liga NOS), only submitted his candidature for the election during the final day for the submission of applications on 22/07/2015.

"We will have to define a strategic plan for the league, to increase competitiveness, define a fair, transparent and equitable model of revenue allocation, and generate more value for stakeholders," stated Pedro Proença during his inauguration speech on 30/07/2015.
