Twitter: 23 football clubs among the top 30 most followed sports franchises in the world

Of the top 30 most followed sports clubs or franchises on Twitter in the world, 23 are football clubs, including 16 from the Top 5 European leagues, according to data compiled by News Tank Football on 10/08/2015. The top 30 teams include 23 football clubs, four NBA franchises, one MLB franchise, one NFL franchise and one Indian cricket club.

The first eight of the Top 30 places are European football clubs. 14 of the top teams operate outside of Europe. The second most represented sport behind football is basketball, with four NBA franchises. Six football clubs in South America (five in Brazil and one in Argentina), plus one football club from Mexico, are part of the top 30 most followed sports franchises in the world.

The Indian cricket team Chennai Super Kings are ahead of eight football clubs, including three European ones. The New England Patriots (NFL) are 30^th in the list.
