Serie A: Empoli FC plan Stadio Carlo Castellani renovation, however the city is blocking the project

Empoli FC (Serie A TIM) presented their planned renovation of the Stadio Carlo Castellani, the stadium belonging to the City of Empoli of which the club is the main resident, on 11/08/2015. The cost of the project is estimated at €11m and notably plans the removal of the athletics track, the covering of all the stands and maintaining the current capacity of the stadium (about 20,000 spectators).

"We believe this is a great opportunity. The redevelopment would allow us to replace the existing stands with modern ones, creating space for retail and hospitality," said Francesco Ghelfi, the CEO of Empoli FC, on 11/08/2015. The club proposes that the stadium roof be covered with solar panels installed by the energy supplier Enegan, a candidate for the naming rights of the stadium.

"The plans are not even in the preliminary stages. We are still far from a feasibility study," said Brenda Barnini, the Mayor of Empoli, on 12/08/2015.
