"I resigned because I wanted to protect FIFA. I can protect myself, I'm strong enough. I know what I have done, what I have not done, I have my conscience and I know I'm an honest man. I am clean," said Joseph Blatter, FIFA president, on 24/08/2015.

Joseph Blatter was re-elected for a fifth term (2015-2019 period) to the FIFA presidency on 29/05/2015, but announced, on 02/06/2015, that he would "lay down my mandate" at an extraordinary FIFA Congress convened to elect his successor. Seven officials, two of which were then FIFA vice-presidents, Eugenio Figueredo (Uruguay) and Jeffrey Webb (Cayman Islands), were arrested in Zurich (SUI) on 27/07/2015 for extradition to the United States. They been charged with corruption and money laundering and could face up to 20 years in prison.

The elections will be held during a Congress organised in Zurich (SUI) on 26/02/2016. The deadline for the submission of candidate applications is 26/10/2015 (four months before the election).
