Olympics 2024: Toronto declines to submit candidacy, leaving only 5 potential host cities

The City of Toronto (CAN) will not bid to host the Olympic Games in 2024, announced the mayor of the city, John Tory, on 15/09/2015. "I'm not saying no to the Olympics, I'm just saying not this time", he said. Candidate cities had until midnight on 15/09/2015 to submit their applications to the IOC.

While there remains some uncertainty as to whether Baku (AZE) submitted their application just before the deadline, the five official candidate cities to host the 2024 Olympic Games are Paris (FRA), Rome (ITA), Los Angeles (USA), Budapest (HUN) and Hamburg (GER). The host city of the 2024 Olympics will be decided in September 2017 during the 130th IOC session in Lima (PER).

Toronto had already failed twice in bidding for the Olympics in 1996 (held in Atlanta, USA) and 2008 (held in Beijing, CHN). 58% of Toronto residents were in favour of a bid, according to a survey conducted by the Canadian agency Mainstreet Technologies, in August 2015.
