United Kingdom: BBC and ITV acquire the broadcasting rights to Euro 2016 and Euro 2020

The public broadcaster BBC and the private free-TV broadcaster ITV have acquired the UK broadcasting rights for the Euro 2016 and Euro 2020 competitions, on 17/10/2015. No financial information or details on the division of the 51 matches in each tournament between the two media groups have been disclosed.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland have qualified for the finals of Euro 2016. The rights are valid for all television and radio broadcasting platforms (including internet and mobile). The rights include highlights of all the matches, as well as the rights to broadcast them via delayed broadcast.

The BBC and ITV have jointly broadcast Euro competitions since 1988. The European Football Championship is registered, in its entirety, on the list of sporting events considered of major importance in the UK, which must be broadcast by a "free television service".

  • Euro 2020 will be held in 13 cities across 13 UEFA member countries, including London (ENG), Glasgow (SCO) and Dublin (IRL).
