FIFA: Tokyo Sexwale proposes the introducuction of shirt sponsorship for national teams

Tokyo Sexwale, a candidate for the presidency of FIFA, has proposed to "seriously explore the possibility of having the national jersey... bearing the logo of the main sponsor". The South African said: "There is space there for much value worth millions of dollars which will be destined directly into FAs' coffers!", at the publication of his 14-page manifesto on 18/11/2015.

"For all matches, all forms of advertising for sponsors, manufacturers (exceeding the extent of manufacturer’s identification permitted) or any third parties, of political, religious or personal statements and/or other announcements, are strictly prohibited on all playing equipment items used on, or brought into (permanently or temporarily), the controlled stadium area," states article 54.1 of the FIFA equipment regulations for international matches. Other international sports federations have allowed shirt sponsorship such as FIBA, who allows sponsorship for all international matches, and World Rugby who allow sponsorship for internationals except for World Cup matches.
