Naming in American sport

Stadium naming was born overseas during the inter-war period. In 1926, William Wrigley Jr., chewing gum industrialist and owner of the Chicago Cubs baseball franchise, named the team's stadium Wrigley Field.

Since the emergence of a professional sports industry in the United States, owners of franchises in major leagues across the sporting spectrum, including the NFL (National Football League), have used stadium naming as a technique to finance their infrastructures.
