"During the next few months, we will evaluate the possibility of growing the league to 28 teams and establish a process and timeline should we decide on further expansion." said Don Garber, the MLS Commisioner, following an owners' meeting of the North American league in Columbus (Ohio, USA), on 05/12/2015.

The meeting took place on the eve of MLS Cup 2015, the league final, won 2-1 by the Portland Timbers over Columbus Crew SC on 06/12/2015. Major League Soccer has 20 franchises in 2015, and has plans in place to move to 24 teams by 2020, with the debut of four new franchises: Atlanta United FC (2017), Los Angeles FC (2017 or 2018) and Minnesota (2017 or 2018), while doubt remains about the potential Miami franchise (not before 2018), due the inability of the group's owners to build a downtown stadium.
