CONMEBOL: resignation of JA Napout, Wilmar Valdez interim president until elections on 26/01/2016

The Uruguayan Wilmar Valdez was named interim president of CONMEBOL, following the resignation of the Paraguayan Juan Angel Napout, who served as president of the South American Confederation since August 2014, announced CONMEBOL, at the end of a meeting of its Executive Committee on 11/12/2015.

Juan Angel Napout was arrested in Zurich (SUI) and detained for extradition to the United States on 03/12/2015. He was charged on the same day by the United States Department of Justice. Juan Angel Napout is suspected, along with 15 others indicted on 03/12/2015, of racketeering, financial fraud and money laundering. He agreed to be extradited to the United States on 08/12/2015.

"With the resignation of Mr. Juan Angel Napout as president, the Congress has been scheduled for the election of the president and vice-presidents, on 26/01/2016. The elected officials will hold office until the end of this mandate in 2019," said CONMEBOL.
