MLS set a new record for overall match attendance during the league's 2015 play-off series with 388,289 cumulative spectators over the 17 matches, according to data published by MLS and compiled by News Tank Football on 22/12/2015.

However, the average attendance of the MLS play-off matches was 22,841 spectators per match in 2015, down 3.3% from 2014, when the league averaged 23,630 spectators per play-off match. The league did set a new mark by selling out 12 of the 17 play-off matches in 2015.

MLS expanded its play-off format in 2015 to 17 total matches, compared to the 15 match format used from 2012-2014. In 2015, 12 teams (6 from each conference) qualified for the play-offs out of 20 teams in total in MLS. The Western Conference club Portland Timbers defeated the Eastern Conference club Columbus Crew SC 2-1 in Columbus (Ohio, USA) to win the final of the 2015 MLS Cup on 06/12/2015.
