The 2016 winter transfer window opened in France, England and Germany on Saturday 02/01/2016 at 00:00 hours CET. In Italy and Spain, the window began on Monday 04/01/2016 at the same time. In these five countries, as well as in most other European countries, this January transfer period ends at midnight on Monday 01/02/2016 CET.

The 98 clubs of the European Top 5 leagues (Barclays Premier League, Liga BBVA, Bundesliga, Serie A TIM and Ligue 1) cumulatively spent €387.8m and recorded €258.1m in revenues during the winter transfer window in 2015, which resulted in a negative transfer balance of €129.7m.

These amounts were up compared to the 2014 winter transfer market: +16.5% in spending, +13% in revenues and transfer balance deficit widened by +23.5%. Despite this, 2015 did not approach the record of past winter window records: €507.5m in spending and €386.2m in revenues during the 2011 winter window, and a negative transfer balance of €187.7m in 2008.
