Uruguay and Argentina will present a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup, announced Mauricio Macri, President of Argentina and Tabaré Vázquez, President of Uruguay, at a joint press conference in Colonia (Uruguay) on 07/01/2016.

"In 2030, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the World Cup. We have decided that our best opportunity is to jointly nominate ourselves as candidates, Uruguay-Argentina and Argentina-Uruguay to host the 2030 World Cup. We have a lot of time, but that allows us to plan things, figure out the problems and resolve them in advance," said the new President of Argentina (in office since 10/12/2015) Mauricio Macri on 07/01/2016.

Uruguay hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1930. Uruguay won the competition, defeating Argentina (4-2) in the final on 30/07/1930. Argentina also hosted the World Cup in 1978, which they also won (defeating the Netherlands, 3-1 a.e.t., on 25/06/1978).

  • The 2002 World Cup is the only to have been organised by two countries, South Korea and Japan.
