Facebook: rankings of the European Top 5 clubs (January 2016)

The Premier League remains the most popular European football championship on Facebook with over 216,100,000 cumulative fans for the 20 clubs in the league in 2015-16, according to data compiled by Tank News Football on 11/01/2016.

14 Premier League clubs have more than 20 million fans. The second most popular championship is the Liga BBVA, with 197.4 million cumulative fans (including 89.3 million for FC Barcelona and 86.1 million for Real Madrid CF), followed by the Serie A TIM with 65.9 million Facebook fans.

  • During December 2015, FC Barcelona (Liga BBVA) gained over 850,000 Facebook fans, thanks to their victory in the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup, held in Japan from 10/12/2015 to 20/12/2015.
  • Leicester City FC (Premier League) recorded the largest increase in December 2015, going from 773,000 to 1,149,120 fans on Facebook. This 48.7% could be explained by the club's positive run of form during this month (4 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss). 
    • After 20 matchdays Leicester City are second in the Premier League with 40 points, two behind leaders Arsenal FC (42 points).
