CONMEBOL: Alejandro Dominguez is unanimously elected president and becomes a FIFA vice-president

Alejandro Dominguez (Paraguay) was elected president of CONMEBOL for four years (2016-2019) during the Extraordinary Congress of the South American Confederation, in Luque (Paraguay), on 26/01/2016.

He was the only candidate for the post after the withdrawal of the candidacy of Uruguayan Wilmar Valdez, interim president of the federation since 11/12/2015, who had initially announced its intention to run for the presidency, before pulling out of the race.

Alejandro Dominguez (44 years old) had been president of the Paraguayan Federation since 2014. He succeeds another Paraguayan, Juan Angel Napout, who resigned from the presidency of CONMEBOL on 11/12/2015, following his indictment, on 03/12/2015, by the US Department of Justice. Juan Angel Napout is suspected, along with 15 others indicted on 03/12/2015, of racketeering, financial fraud and money laundering. He agreed to be extradited to the United States on 08/12/2015.

Alejandro Dominguez was also elected by Congress as the representative of CONMEBOL in the role of FIFA vice-president.
