Financial fair play: Malaga appear before the Court of Arbitration for Sport

On the 04/06/2013, Malaga (La Liga) appeared before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to appeal for the annulment of the decision made by UEFA's financial supervisory authority who, on the 21/12/2012, disqualified them from entering European cup competitions for the next four years.

The financial authority had also fined the Spanish club €300k for having significant arrears. Finishing sixth in La Liga in 2012/13, Malaga have qualified for the 2013/14 Europa League, so hope that the decision made by UEFA will be annulled. The CAS's decision is expected during the week of the 10/06/2013.

UEFA have introduced financial fair play regulations to try and put and end to club deficits. The first phase of the project is limiting clubs' arrears. The second phase, which starts in 2014, will force clubs to present balanced accounts over a three-year period, in which income exceeds outgoings (unless they are related to investments in club infrastructure).
