"This conference is crucial because it will decide two important things: a vote on the reforms proposed by the Reform Committee and then the election of the president who will have the responsibility to carry out these reforms," said Issa Hayatou, acting FIFA president, on 19/02/2016, about the Extraordinary Congress of the international federation, held in Zurich (SUI) on 26/02/2016.

Five candidates are in the running to replace Joseph Blatter, president since 08/06/1998, but currently suspended from any activity in football since 08/10/2015:
• Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein (Jordan)
• Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa (Bahrain)
• Jérôme Champagne (France)
• Gianni Infantino (Switzerland)
• Tokyo Sexwale (South Africa)

Issa Hayatou, defeated by Blatter in the presidential election in 2002, never considered becoming a candidate this time round, stating: "For personal reasons about my health (he had a kidney transplant in November 2015), but also because there was already enough trouble at the time.
