The Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance 2013, released on the 06/06/2013, revealed that the European leagues generated a combined turnover in 2011/12 of €19.4bn.

The five "major" European leagues (England, Germany, Spain, Italy, France) represent 48% of this amount (€9.3bn):

1 - Premier League (ENG). €2.9bn (+4%)
2 - Bundesliga (GER): €1.8bn (64% of Premier League, +7%)
3 - La Liga (ESP): €1.6bn (57% of Premier League, +3%)
4 - Serie A (ITA): €1.5bn (53% of Premier League, +1%)
5 - Ligue 1 (FRA): €1.1bn(39% of Premier League, +9%)

Of the five major European leagues, only the Bundesliga and the Premier League registered a positive operating income (before transfers and finance costs), €190m for the Bundesliga, €121m for the Premier League. Meanwhile Ligue 1 registered a loss of €67m.

  • The Bundesliga only spent 25% of the increase of its turnover to increase payroll. The German league has the best payroll/turnover ratio:/
    • 1 - Bundesliga: 51% (payroll = €1bn)
    • 2 - La Liga: 60% (payroll = €1.1bn) 
    • 3 - Premier League: 70% (payroll = €2bn)
    • 4 - Ligue 1: 74% (payroll = €0.8bn)
