Newcastle's Papiss Cissé refuses to wear club shirt sponsored by loans company Wonga

Newcastle United's (Premier League, ENG) striker Papiss Cissé refuses to wear the club's new shirt as his religious beliefs forbid him from representing or advertising loan firms.

The club has agreed a jersey sponsorship deal for 2013-14 with pay-day loans company Wonga, on the 09/10/2012.

Papiss Cissé, a practicing Muslim, does not want to wear the shirt on the basis that Muslims must not benefit from either lending money or receiving money from another person. "Newcastle United will make a decision regarding that matter on due time", has indicated a club's spokesperson to NTF, on the 12/06/2013.

Newcastle's shirts branded with the Wonga logo went on sale on the 15/05/2013.

In a similar situation in 2011-12, Sevilla FC (La Liga, ESP) allowed its striker Freddie Kanouté to wear an unbranded shirt rather than one branded with 888.com, an online casino company.
